Little Mac Gets a New Name

July 16, 2010 · 28 comments

I know, I know – I made you wait sooo long! But here it is. Our new name…

homeroom

Before I tell you the significance of the name, I quickly want to say that on July 24th, from 6pm – midnight, we’ll be cooking up mac and cheese at the SF Underground’s Farmers’ Market at SOMArts in San Francisco. Come down if you can! Live music, drinks, and hundreds of people enjoying really great food. And, you can get a taste of our smoky spicy mac and our creamy goat mac with spring onions.

Back to the name. So why homeroom? Well, remember when you were a kid, and homeroom was this between-class period at the beginning of your school day? It was a time of free reign when you could laugh with friends, pass notes to your cute boyfriend, trade snacks from your lunchbox. Good times, wouldn’t you say?

And, there’s the other homeroom. The actual room in one’s home. A place where you feel most comfortable, relaxed, content. Feels nice, huh?

So that’s why we love homeroom. It conveys an image of childhood, of smiles, of times with friends. Erin and I want homeroom to be a place that not only conjures these great memories, but also where you can make new ones, while enjoying quality food made from local ingredients.

There was one problem with homeroom though – we thought of it ourselves. We received over 800 suggestions, but my god this was a tough decision. Who would have thought that naming a restaurant would be so difficult? More so even than naming a child (don’t hold me to that. I don’t exactly have any kids). We were seriously flabbergasted by the number of names we received from all of you. I still can’t believe it – people from all over the world took time out of their day to help us think of a name for our small Oakland restaurant. Incredible.

Anyway, we did pick our 10 favorites, and those winners will receive a free meal for four when we open. Want to hear the names? I’m gonna make you work a little… Head over to our new site, homeroom510.com, and check them out. While you’re there, join our facebook page, follow us on twitter, or sign up for restaurant updates.

Wow. These have been two of the most stressful weeks we’ve had yet. The thing about opening a restaurant, or any business I would think, is that you start each day with a to-do list, only to have it fly out the window by noon. Things just keep coming up. New things, unanticipated things, things you hadn’t even thought of yet. It’s so tiring. But it’s also kind of great. We’re building this incredible place (hopefully), and it’s all ours. We make all the decisions. So while I never expected this stage of the process to be so overwhelming, I also wasn’t expecting it to be so… rewarding.

So that’s it for now. I will have a recipe soon, I promise. Over the past year, this blog has become such a part of me, that when I can’t post as often as I would like, I feel that something is missing.

I hope you like our new name, and I look forward to eating some mac and cheese with all of you sometime soon!

I like this name. All along I thought it should be something that immediately makes you think “retro.”
I am thinking of those old fashioned lunch buckets and galoshes. I think you will have a winner all around.

Getting bullied out of Little Mac was probably a blessing in disguise. Homeroom is light years better as it’s warm, cosy and says so much more =) love it when something so cool happens out of a bad situation! it’s all meant to be!

I am curious to find out what blog platform you happen to be using? I’m having some minor security problems with my latest website and I’d like to find something more safeguarded. Do you have any recommendations?
